Video Toolkits: Learn How to Support & Retain Veteran Employees

 

In these one-minute snippets, Dr. Leslie Hammer, introduces you to specific behaviors that can help supervisors support their veteran employees. These behaviors are tied to improved employee health, decreased family stress and increased employee retention. The videos are based on the Veteran Supportive Supervisor Training developed by Dr. Hammer and her research team.

Wellbeing in the Workplace - Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, in collaboration with the President’s Roadmap to Empower Veterans and End the National Tragedy of Suicide (PREVENTS) Executive Order Task Force and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, launched Wellbeing in the Workplace, a collaborative effort to prioritize mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. As part of the effort, coalition companies and organizations are signing a Pledge to Prioritize Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing in the Workplace.

Supporting your Employees in the National Guard and Reserve

The Veterans Employment Toolkit was created by the National Center for PTSD, a VA center of excellence for research and education on the prevention, understanding, and treatment of PTSD, in conjunction with the VA's Mental Health Services. Veterans bring valuable skills and experience from their military service to your workforce. Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is the leading source of free, expert, and confidential guidance on workplace accommodations and disability employment issues. JAN offers one-on-one guidance on workplace accommodations, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related legislation, and self-employment and entrepreneurship options for people with disabilities.

Veteran Resource Navigator

The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs has developed a new online tool to help guide veterans and their families in recovery in the wake of the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and to inform them of any changes to their earned benefits. The Veteran Resource Navigator is designed to assist veterans from all walks of life in finding the federal, state and local resources that are most needed for their unique circumstances in 2020.

This tool includes resources that are organized by topic, including Economic, Health, Education, Housing and Food, and other resources. Veterans can also access additional assistance, by calling an ODVA Veteran Resource Navigator at 800-692-9666.

VA Northwest Health Network

A comprehensive list of VA Medical Centers, vet centers, and community based outpatient clinics (CBOCS ) located in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska.

 

Oregon State County Veteran Service Offices

Whether you served your country more than 65 years ago or have just returned home, the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs (ODVA) and Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) statewide are here to help you. When working with a VSO, you will be served by an accredited and certified professional who is an expert in veteran law. There are VSOs in every county across Oregon, in many national service organizations and at the Salem and Portland offices of the ODVA. Worksource Oregon list of DVOPS/LVERS

Worksource Oregon has veteran employment representatives (DVOPS/ LVERS) who assist veterans on transitioning back into the civilian workforce and alerting them to available training opportunities. Get connected with representatives who provide specialized vocational guidance and application assistance, specialized workshops and clubs, information on federal contract and government employment opportunities and more.

Returning Veterans Project

Returning Veterans Project is a nonprofit organization comprised of politically unaffiliated and independent health care practitioners who offer free and confidential services to returning veterans and service members of the current Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns and their families. Services are available in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Volunteer providers are mental health professionals, acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists and other complementary health care practitioners. We believe it is our collective responsibility to offer support and healing for the short and long-term repercussions of war zone service on veterans and their families.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is Oregon's principal agency for helping Oregonians achieve wellbeing and independence through opportunities that protect, empower, respect choice and preserve dignity, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. 87% of the DHS budget is spent directly in Oregon communities by providing direct services to more than 1 million Oregonians each year. DHS services include SNAP benefits, TANF, Aging and Disability services, Child Welfare and adoption, and OHP/Cover Oregon information.

VA National Center for PTSD Family Guide for Reintegration

Many families wrestle with reintegration issues. Service members and their loved ones have had different experiences during the deployment period, and all have changed as a result. This guide is designed to help families set realistic expectations, and work through some of the challenges of homecoming, in order to make the reunion as happy as possible.

 

Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program

The Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program is a mandatory program to facilitate connecting National Guard service members and their families with community supports before, during, and after deployments. Here, you'll learn about Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program events, how to find a nearby event and who to contact for more answers.

Military REACH Research and Outreach

To facilitate the Department of Defense's provision of high-quality support to military families, Military REACH bridges the gap between research and practice. Their mission is two-fold - to make research accessible and practical. They strive to put research into the hands of military families, direct service helping professionals, and those who work on behalf of military families by harnessing collaborative expertise, maximizing technological advances, and actively disseminating products.

Assistance includes help with emergency or temporary housing and related housing expenses, expenses for utilities, insurance, house repairs, rent assistance or food; emergency medical or dental expenses; emergency transportation; expenses related to starting a business, such as business licenses or occupational licenses; temporary income after military discharge; and legal assistance for certain veteran issues

Follow the link to "DVNF Financial Guidance Program." The DVNF Financial Guidance Program will provide Veterans with a free Military Membership Kit for Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University which entitles the Veteran to enroll in and attend the 13 week money management course either at a local, in person, class or via the online course offering. The goal of DVNF's Financial Guidance Program is to help Veterans learn to better budget their money, save for unexpected expenses and pay off debt. To be eligible, Veterans must have served in the active military or military auxiliaries, and have been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.

You must go through Military OneSource in order to access the sessions at no cost, available to active-duty, Guard, and Reserve members (regardless of activation status) and families located in the continental U.S. Up to 12 counseling sessions per issue, per calendar year are allowed for each person.  You can also request an audio CD titled "Taking Charge of Your Money."
